AFTER THEY WERE DONE with their lesson in magic, Alistair let Vivienne go but remained behind in the forest.

You can show yourself now.

“You always were very good at sensing me when I didn’t want to be seen,” Ardea muttered as she stepped out of the shadows.

Alistair threw her an unimpressed look. What is it you wish this time?

“This new charge of yours... I know Aequus has told you what he has seen. But there is more.”

Will there be a price for this information? At Ardea’s surprised look, he chuckled. Come now, sister, I do not expect free gifts from you or my brother.

“Believe what you will, but I tell you this with no strings attached. I am tired of squabbling with you, Atrox.”

Alistair.

“As you wish, Alistair. I know there was only one event that would have led to your complete stripping of identity as you did. Whether my suspicions are correct or not, I thank you. With Vulper gone, we finally have peace in the pantheon.”

I do not know what you are referring to.

“Yes, I thought as much,” Ardea said wearily. “What I came to deliver is this: Mordred, the fruit of Merlin and Morgana’s toxic love, is of age as well. They are both helping Carleigh and Guinevere. Though your friend Merlin does his best to shield Arthur, it is a lost cause. Vivienne, on the other hand, can be saved.”

How?

“Do not let her fall prey to Carleigh, whatever the cost may be.”

You have seen something?

“A trickery, before the ultimate battle... Be warned, brother. Your choice may remove you from the equation, but it will give Vivienne a chance to best them all.”

Alistair was silent, pondering his sister’s words, and filing them away for future use. Finally, he met her gaze. Thank you.

“You are most welcome.” Ardea inclined her head. “If we do not see each other again, I wish you luck.”

With that, she shimmered away, leaving the demon dog to his thoughts.
